About

flor_pic_2Dr. Florencia Montagnini’s research/consultant work focuses on sustainability of forests and agroforestry systems, with a special emphasis on Latin America; sustainable land use systems that integrate ecological principles with economic, social, and political factors; forest landscape restoration; reforestation of degraded lands with native species; ecosystem services (biodiversity, carbon and watershed protection); adaptation and mitigation to climate change; Payments for Environmental Services as tools for restoration, conservation, and rural development; organic farming using indigenous resources; biodiversity conservation in human-dominated landscapes; biodiversity islands.

She is currently conducting projects in regions encompassing major types of tropical and subtropical forest in Latin America. The research is in collaboration with institutions such as CATIE (Tropical Agriculture Research and Higher Education Center, Costa Rica), as well as with universities and other academic, private and government institutions in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, and Panama.  In addition, her work has also taken her to Africa and Southeast Asia.

She has written eleven books on agroforestry systems, ecological restoration, tropical forest ecology and management, and about 250 scientific articles, of which 80% have been published in international refereed journals. Several of her publications are in Spanish to ensure dissemination and as a contribution to the host countries.

She teaches courses in agroforestry, tropical forest ecology and management, and restoration ecology and holds honorary professorships at several universities in Latin America. She also participates in Yale’s Environmental Leadership Training Initiatives (ELTI) activities with short-courses on ecosystem services and forest restoration/ conservation and agroforestry, acting as faculty for on-line and field courses in Latin America, both in English and in Spanish.

Native species – Yerba Mate Agroforestry

In Misiones, Argentina, we are studying the factors that influence the integration of native tree species in organic agroforestry systems. One specific tree of interest is yerba mate, Ilex paraguariensis, a species of long, traditional use by original indigenous people in the Atlantic Forest region of South America. Yerba mate leaves are consumed locally as…
